Ever wonder who the quirky names are behind our pre-packaged ice cream sammie line? When creating Coolhaus, our founder and CEO, Natasha Case wanted to make architecture accessible and fun to the masses. While working at Disney, she started creating ice cream sandwiches with delicious cookie and ice cream pairings and naming the “cool houses” after architects she admired. That was back in 2008. Fast forward nine years and these quirky, incredibly delicious sammies have maintained their architecturally inspired names and can be found in over 5,000 retailers nationwide.
Let’s Dive Deeper into the Names Behind the Sammies:

Mintimalism – two double chocolate chip cookies with dirty mint chip ice cream

Peter Cook-ies and Cream – two double chocolate chip cookies with cookies and cream ice cream
English architect Peter Cook founded the architectural group Archigram. His work focused on the neo-futuristic styles that can best be described as “funky back to the future”. Cook’s structures were often capsule-like, high tech, and lightweight. His buildings include the Art Museum in Graz in Austria and the Abedian School of Architecture in Australia.

Rem’s Coolhaus – One snickerdoodle and one chocolate chip cookie with salted chocolate ice cream
This ice cream sandwich is named after Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas (fun fact: our shop is named after Koolhaas, the Bauhaus movement, and the fact that ice cream sammies are basically little houses). Koolhaas is known for being anything but conventional. His design style is best known as gravity-defying and unusual – see his work on the Beijing CCTV Headquarters and the Seattle Central Library.
Louis Ba-Kahn – two chocolate chip cookies with brown butter candied bacon
Named after American architect Louis Kahn. Kahn’s work is considered modernist and heavy. His structures do not hide how they were made or the materials that were used, and they often take cues from medieval walls and structures.
