Why DIY Dehydrated Chicken Feet ? That seems like a weird, arrant choice, right ? There are a distribute of reasons we choose to give our Chihuahuas Dehydrated Chicken Feet. here are a few benefits :

Dehydrated Chicken Feet Benefits

  • Entirely edible and safe for chewing and digestion
  • Promote healthy chewing which helps keep teeth clean (in addition to regular brushing and maintenance).
  • All natural (no preservatives, additives, or artificial color)
  • NO wheat, corn, or soy
  • Single ingredient treat/chew
  • Supports joint health (chicken feet have naturally occurring collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and natural minerals which are good for joints)

We prefer to make our own Dehydrated Chicken Feet, because we are able to ensure that the feet meet our standards for choice and freshness. besides, we have found, that not only do our Chihuahuas prefer the taste of our homemade Dehydrated Chicken Feet, but the cost is besides much better for us !

We are able to get raw chicken feet from our local butch, but you may besides be able to find reputable sources online ( if you do, please let us know in the comments ! ) .

We live in Arizona, so dry time for our chicken feet is entirely about 24 hours, but depending on where you live, it may take much longer. Because of the time it takes for the chicken feet to dehydrate, we recommend preparing as many chicken feet as your dehydrator can fit at one prison term !

Now, a quick warning before you scroll down….raw chicken feet are gross!!!  So, if you don’t like photos of raw meat (ahem, feet), we have the full recipe below so you don’t have to scroll through gross photos:

And now for the full recipe (with photos):

The first thing we do is give the feet a rinse.

Chicken feet have nails and they are quite sharp (even more so once they are dehydrated).  We don’t want our Chihuahuas eating these when they are dry and brittle, s o we use chase nail clippers to clip them off !

Our dehydrator fits about 10 chicken feet per tray.  We ordered some extra trays (for a total of six trays), so we can dehydrate around 60 feet at one time!

We dry our chicken feet for approximately 24 hours.  However, as we mentioned earlier, depending on your dehydrator, where you live, and the size of the chicken feet you are dehydrating you may need more or less time.

You’ll know when the chicken feet are dehydrated and ready for your dog when there is no flex in the feet, especially the skin and the padded parts.  The chicken feet should be dry and hard.

A little over 24 hours later and they’re done! No need to place in oven afterwards.  Though we do recommend storing them in an ziploc-type-tight baggy as they are an all-natural chew.  For even longer-lasting Dehydrated Chicken Feet, store them in the refrigerator!

Dehydrated Chicken Feet are really tasty (according to Chihuahuas) and all our dogs love them.
