Ingredient substitutions

  • chicken breasts – if you prefer dark meat, you can use boneless chicken thighs instead
  • hoisin sauce – be sure to look for a gluten free brand if you need one. If you don’t have hoisin sauce, you can use bean paste or 2 tbsp honey and 1 tbsp soy sauce mixed together to replace it
  • sesame oil – Sesame oil is the best choice for Asian dishes like this one. If you need a substitute, stick to a neutral flavor like vegetable oil
  • soy sauce – feel free to use low-sodium to reduce the salt. If you need a gluten free substitute, use tamari
  • garlic cloves – minced garlic that comes in a jar works too
  • fresh ginger – if you can’t find fresh ginger, you can use 1 tsp of ginger powder
  • honey – for Asian foods, good substitutes for honey are agave syrup or brown rice syrup

If you shop at an asian market, won ton wrappers will be easy to find. They are normally in the refrigerated foods section .
At traditional grocery store stores, they are typically in the refrigerated department of the ethic food aisle. Otherwise, look in the produce section. They might be near the spice roots ( like ginger ), or near the refrigerated salad dressings .
